Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club’s wing Dom Marshall is about to set out on a massive new adventure playing rugby in one of the world’s most exciting emerging rugby communities, while getting paid to teach English.
Marshall has progressed through Weston’s minis and junior’s sections before making his making the first of his 31 appearances for the 1stXV when he came off the bench in the 31-nil win at Exmouth in November 2021.
Next season, Marshall, 23, will play rugby in China for the Shenzhen Pirates, who are in the Hong Kong "Premiership A" semi-professional league and the All China Cup .
“This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented player, and it will have a positive effect on his rugby, providing a wonderful insight into another country and culture,” said Weston’s director of rugby, Mark Matthews.
“While he is not training or playing rugby, Dom will be teaching English in some of the local schools where all classes are taught in English. The actual teaching hours are usually 15-25 per week but no clashes with rugby.
Although the rugby season in China runs, like our own, from September through to March, with around 20 games per season, Dom is flying out to Shenzhen this week so will miss the Club’s Awards night.
