The first of Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club’s recruits ahead of the first season back in Regional 1 Tribute Ale South West is centre or wing Huw Morgan, who has spent the past two seasons along the road at ‘The Nest’ with National 2 West side Hornets, where he made 38 appearances.

Morgan progressed through the Weston age-grade sides and made his senior debut in November 2015 in the 23-17 South West One home defeat by Wells. He made 139 appearances for the Weston first team, scoring 43 tries, before joining the Hornets.

“I enjoyed my time with the Hornets playing National League rugby, especially when we beat some of the top teams, including victories against the Cornish teams Redruth and league champions Camborne,” said 32-year-old Morgan.

“Now I am looking forward to being back playing alongside another good group of mates. Memories of past Weston games are rolling back like the time we played at Exmouth in 70 mph winds, but we returned home with a 31-nil victory and five league points.

“With Weston gaining promotion, having gone through last season unbeaten, lots of clubs in the Regional 1 Tribute Ale South West league have us marked as the team to beat. It will be a very competitive league where we will be up for the challenge by playing some good attacking rugby.

Morgan, who has his own business dealing with domestic and commercial building and carpentry refurbishment projects, represented Somerset at Twickenham when they beat Staffordshire in Division 2 of the Bill Beaumont County Championship in April 2022.
