JAMIE Rudkin, David Swann and Andrew Bridgeman won the major awards at the Weston RFC’s dinner and presentation evening at the clubhouse.
Flanker Rudkin, who was the equal leading try scorer with 15, picked up the Ted Hurman Salver, and prop David Swann received the Peter Spencer Trophy.
Bridgeman was awarded the prestigious Clubman of the Year trophy for all his voluntary work around the club.
The Young Player trophy went to hooker Craig Withers and the George White Cup was given to former centre Derek Hannam for his unstinting work with the club’s junior section.
United XV skipper Stuart Board reported a mixed season having recovered from a poor start, but finishing in sixth place in the Somerset Premier Division, and it was team manager Chris Heath who awarded the Player of the Year trophy to lock Simon Hudson and the team’s physiotherapist Livvy James was presented with a gift.
Team manager, former club captain Ian Disney, spoke about the Athletic team’s difficult season which was affected by injuries in the senior ranks and presented the Young Player award to Rob Blackborrow. The player of the year for the Athletic was Dan Prime.
Colts coach Chris Hurd reported that the team had won the Bristol League and provided many of the squad to the United and first teams. Hurd made the following presentations – young player: Rich Ford; players’ player: Sam Webb-Wood; clubman: Dan Lomax; player of the year: Seb Harris.
He also paid tribute to the work of Grahame Hill in the kitchen and Oliver Ridge at the scoreboard.
The club’s president John Brentnall presented public address announcer Bob Hedges with an engraved silver salver on his retirement after a stint of 40 seasons at the microphone.
The event was hosted by secretary Jack Russell.
Malvern and London Irish Amateur RFC will be new opponents for Weston next season in National 3 South West.
In a reshuffle, Malvern have been moved from Midlands 3 and the Irish, whose home is at Sunbury, have departed London 3 West.
These two clubs will be joined by Maidenhead, Brixham and Avonmouth Old Boys who have been promoted from South West 1 East and West.
