The Right Honourable the Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare

It was with deep sadness that Weston-super-Mare RFC learnt of the untimely death, peacefully at home ‘between writing sessions’, of The Right Honourable the Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare at the age of 86.
Archer was a former patron of Weston-super-Mare RFC, supporting the club for many years, and was a guest speaker at its 150th anniversary dinner in May, where his entertaining wit and storytelling entertained the 300 guests.
At 29, Archer was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for the Lincolnshire constituency of Louth, retaining the seat for the Conservative Party in a by-election in December 1969.
Archer was made a life peer, becoming the Right Honourable the Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare, in July 1992, in recognition of his fundraising work for displaced Kurds.
Lord Archer retired from the House of Lords in July 2024, following proposed changes to the House by the new Labour government, but retained the title Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare for life.
Archer’s death came just one day before the publication of his new novel, Adam and Eve, on Tuesday, 6 October. He had been signing books for hundreds of fans at a sold-out event in central London on Sunday.
The club extends its deepest condolences to his wife, Mary (Lady Archer), and their sons, William and James, at this difficult time.
