Loosehead prop Jason Rowland has left his boyhood club of Wellington to start the 2026/27 season with Regional 1 Tribute Ale South West newcomers Weston-super-Mare.
Rowland had played for Wellington since he was 13 and progressed to play 18 games for their 1stXV last season, including the two defeats by Regional 2 Tribute Ale South West champions Weston-super-Mare.
“I want to challenge myself at a higher level of rugby, and this is an exciting opportunity to do so with a very talented squad. I look forward to playing fast paced, expansive rugby that Weston-super-Mare play,” said Rowland.
“I aim to cement my place as a 1stXV regular starter and gain as much experience as I possibly can. Weston went undefeated last season, and there is no reason why they cannot push for back-to-back promotion.”
The 28-year-old added: “Everyone has put in their best efforts over the summer, especially during the recent heatwave. Weston will be the team everyone will want to beat this season.
“The coaching staff have been pushing us in every training session, and it already looks like it’s paying off. So far, the lads have been very welcoming and have made me feel a part of the squad, and there is a real family atmosphere at the club.”
The Occupational Health Advisor for a private healthcare company operating in the southwest region can also play in the second and back row of the scrums and says he likes to be in the thick of the action.
Due to the delayed start to the season, because of the recent dry spell, Weston don’t start their Regional 1 Tribute Ale South West campaign until Saturday, September 26 when they will host Newent, kick-off 3 pm.
This Saturday (September 5), Weston will host Regional 1 South West Central side Bracknell. On Saturday, September 19, a combined Weston United & Athletic side will welcome North Petherton, kick-off 3 pm. Admission to both games is free.
