Regional 1 South West
Exmouth 64 Weston-super-Mare 14
Report by Chris Heath
In an abject display, only tries by hooker Gary Carpenter and flanker Ben Cox, one converted by the subsequently injured centre James Mackay and the other by fullback Kyran Devitt, gave Weston any salvation in an appalling defensive display.
The performance could resign the Seasiders to playing in the division below next season as they sit two places off the foot of the table, but the sides below them, Old Centralians and Drybrook, have games in hand.
The Exmouth back row had a field day, and the lack of anything remotely resembling a cohesive challenge to the home side's superiority was genuinely disappointing.
Things weren't helped by the early loss of pack cornerstone Ollie Streeter who left the field with a muscle injury midway through the first half, with the hosts leading 14-7 before stretching their half time lead to 33-7 and a bonus point in the bag.
When Mackay followed before halftime and then flanker AJ Hussell soon after the break, Weston were down to the bare bones, but this doesn't excuse the lack of fight, which gained momentum throughout the second half.
Weston must now hope they can pick themselves up and gain maximum points in their final Regional 1 South West league game of the season away at third-paced Brixham on Saturday, kick-off 2.30 pm and hope that other results go their way.
The Seasiders are on 39 points from 21 games, with Old Centralians on 35 from 20 games and Drybrook on 24 from 19 games, but both must face second-placed Chew Valley in the coming weeks.
