Weston win to give hope of survival

Report by Chris Heath

Weston cut out nearly all the mistakes, took the points on offer early on and then produced a monumental scrum to score the first try under the posts to give themselves a sixteen point lead just after the half hour.
Weston without three of their front line backs in Mackay Morgan and Burgess nevertheless carried the fight to Old Centralians from the get go.
Kyran Devitt playing at fullback got the hosts off to a great start by kicking the first three penalties on offer. The first after concerted pressure the second after a break by flanker Billy Kirk and the third a beauty from nearly forty metres out.
Following this a great drive from a line out led to another penalty in front of the posts and the hosts elected to take a scrum which turned into a good decision as they shunted their opponents back over the line to give returning number eight AJ Hussell the opportunity to dab down.
Devitt's conversion a straight forward one.
Three minutes later Weston scored again when a powerful run by hooker Gary Carpenter led to a long pass by fly half Dan Lomax to Devitt who did a superb shoe and go to cross near the posts making his own conversion relatively easy.
Twenty three nil up at the break Weston were buoyant but after an early yellow card in the second period for Kirk following a high tackle the visitors hit back with a try by Liam Hemming from the resulting penalty.
Weston were still playing well with Lomax being tactically astute but a basic mistake by Weston allowed Hemming to go over for his second which this time was converted.
Weston weathered the setback and after some ball retrieval by evergreen lock Ash Russell Devitt was on hand to put right wing Hayden Main over in the corner.
Cents tried to mount a revival but excellent Weston defence kept them at bay.
Weston are not out of the woods yet but with the pack in fine fettle at the moment there will be opportunities to escape the drop.
