Regional 1 Tribute South West

Lydney 17 Weston-super-Mare 27

Report by Chris Heath

Weston travelled to Lydney on the back of their victory over Launceston the previous week and made it two in a row with an improved performance but with plenty to work on still.

The game remained scoreless for thirty four minutes with only a superb fifty metre run by centre Cameron Maslen lighting up the afternoon. However this was the last part he played as he left the field with a shoulder injury being replaced by Jake Knight

Weston did take the lead when fly half James Mackay who had been feeling under the weather all day made a superb break before sending a pass to full back Chris Young who put Devitt over in the corner for a well taken try. Mackay converted superbly from the touch line.

They scored again five minutes later when other centre Huw Morgan made a great break before the combination of Young and Devitt finished the move off.

Half time came and went but Weston weren't going to have an easy second forty as the hosts hit back straight away with a converted try to cut the lead to five points. The deficit was increased five minutes later when a combination of great forward power and great hands from the backs ended with Devitt claiming his third.

Mackay added a penalty shortly after and then Lydney cut the lead again with an excellent try.

Weston responded with the bonus point try when prop Ollie Streeter who along with Sam Coles and Gary Carpenter had dominated the scrum throughout the contest put outstanding number eight Callum Kingscott over. Mackay produced yet another miracle conversion.

Lydney then threw the kitchen sink at the visitors but their defence held until near the final whistle they scored the last try of the game to reduce the final deficit to ten points.

Some good performances from Weston by the whole of the pack especially Kingscott and flanker Ben Cox along with the captain Tom Sugg.

Mackay was imperious although he left the field with a nasty eye injury near the end.

Devitt however produced the finishing touches to an improved away performance.
