Somerset U-19 Cup final at Bath
Bridgwater & Albion 5, Weston 33
Report from Bridgwater Mercury
ALBION Colts couldn't repeat their heroics of the semi-final against a Weston team who did the basics well and fully deserved their victory at the Recreation Ground, Bath on Saturday.
It was the fourth successive year that Weston had won the cup but Bridgwater had been quicker out of the blocks and after five minutes, centre Damian Griffin finished off a bout of handling with a try in the corner.
The conversion was missed narrowly by Mark Kohler, but the game was set up ideally for the forwards to establish some control over smaller opposition.
Unfortunately, they didn't appear to have read the script and Weston started to gain the upper hand in all the contact areas, putting Albion's defence under pressure and forcing turnovers.
Weston were soon back on terms after a similar passage of play that had produced Bridgwater's try ended with a score in the corner.
The conversion was successful and Weston, now with their noses in front, did not look back for the rest of the first half. Before half time, Bridgwater were blitzed by a further three tries, as well as two long-range penalty goals and, by half time, Weston were almost out of sight leading 28-5.
With the game in its dying moments, a refereeing error gave Weston a line-out when the ball clearly hadn't crossed the touchline.
From the ensuing line-out Weston rumbled forward for a score that put the icing on the cake for them and condemned Albion Colts to a disappointing end to their season.
