Weston-super-Mare Colts 26 Yatton Colts 14
Report M Matthews
Weston Colts hosted Yatton on a dry Friday evening following a mixed weeks weather and
disrupted training on Wednesday.
disrupted training on Wednesday.
The boys were further hampered missing coach Chappers and myself enjoying the warm Middle East weather resting with my thoughts consuming stuffed vine leaves and Turkish delight.
So how can a report from so far a field? Well I have my moles and social media can be stitched together.
It’s fair to say the start of the season hasn’t reflected the effort put in by the boys at training with a series of early defeats home and away.
As a positive the social side of the team has gone from strength to strength and it has been this bond that they have relied on to keep spirits high and and ensure good numbers are turning out each week.
The team have been doing well in the detail but have yet to move forward with a game plan that they have been able to maintain for the
games duration.
Yatton are familiar foes who and the platers are well known to each other regularly playing home and away through the age groups. \
The opposition are always up for the game well coached and a challenge.
The early encounters showed promise for both teams who were well matched and the scores stayed even until replacement Bayley Seviour joined the field.
Danny Bamsey had taken on the kicking duties but is was a missed penalty kick for touch that gave Weston the advantage.
The missed touch bounced kindly for Seviour and his first touch of the ball saw him cruise home from the 22, proving a chased kick has its rewards. Bamsey collected the extras, 7-0 and half time arrived.
The next score was to come from fly half Alfie Calcutt following multiple phases on Yatton try line
Weston were able to build pressure. This broke with a dummy from Calcutt a step through and
Weston’s second score, Bamsey again accurate with the boot,14-0.
Yatton were far from beat and worked hard to close the gap scoring next to reduce the lead 14-7.
Plenty of pressure and at the crucial point where Weston have wobbled of late.
In answer the forwards came up with the goods not wanting the the glory seeking backs to enjoy all the praise.
George Holyday who has committed himself to hooker this season and is making a good show of it picked from the base of a ruck to cross the white wash for the third try.
Bamsey again collected the extras his boot not letting him down, 21-7.
Weston needed to hold on to the lead as the clock ticked down but Yatton were far from done has hard work provided their second score and the gap close again to a converted try, 21-14.
Weston stuck to the plan defended well and in the closing moments saw replacement Tom Lewis pick and go off the scrum from 8 to cross the try line in the corner on the last play of the game which asked a little to much of Bamsey’s boot.
