Somerset County Cup semi-final

Hornets 42 Weston-super-Mare 30

Bristol Bears Academy scrum-half JJ Williams was again on the scoresheet. Still, he ended up on the losing side in the Good Friday Cup tie at The Nest. Williams claimed three tries for Weston United the previous in his first game back from injury in November.

Williams was joined in the Weston side by fellow Academy players Dylan Power at inside centre, hooker Aaron Thompson and No.8 Macenzzie Duncan, while Academy lock Costa Galatalis and prop Tom Simon were on the scoresheet for Hornets.

Despite scoring thirty points, Weston were off their game for the most part, and the Hornets ran out deserved winners on the day to avenge the league defeat the previous weekend. Weston actually took an early lead with a penalty by fly-half Chris Young.

But Hornets replied with Sims scoring under the posts, and the conversion by full-back Charlie Carter nudged the home side ahead, a lead they were never to relinquish. Young reduced the arrears with his second penalty

Hornets went into the break 27-19 ahead thanks to tries from openside flanker Corbin Thunder and wing Harry Lyon. Carter converted both and added two penalties, with Young replying with two penalties and the conversion of Williams's try.

The home side stretched their lead to 37-19 early in the second half with a try from Galatalis; Carter converted and added a penalty. Two Young penalties and a try from replacement back Harry Butland reduced the deficit to seven points.

Weston dropped the restart, and the hosts took full advantage to round off the scoring as replacement prop Josh Lloyd was able to control the rolling maul and go over to clinch the victory.

Hornets will face Wellington, who beat Gordano in the other semi-final, in the final on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at Bridgwater & Albion Rugby Football Club, kick-off 7.30pm
