Bristol Combination Cup - semi-final
Cleve 20 Weston-super-Mare 14
Weston-super-Mare wing Chris Crichton almost pulled off a sensational last minute victory in the semi-final of the Bristol Combination Cup at Mangotsfield.
After latching on to a loose ball, Crichton beat several defenders before being halted a foot from Cleve's posts.
Earlier, Crichton had given the Seasiders the lead for the second time when he came off his wing to accept Ben Main's scoring pass.
But before that, Cleve had replied to Mark Armstrong's first minute penalty with a try by Oliver Pritchard, converted by Spencer.
Another Armstrong penalty followed and the score remained at 11-7 at the break.
The Weston fly-half stretched his team's advantage to seven points 12 minutes into the second half with his third penalty but within a couple of minutes the hosts had taken the lead which they were never to lose.
Spencer's penalty and his conversion of Jon Pritchard's individual try were enough for Cleve, especially when Spencer added his second penalty, but they must have had their hearts in their mouths before Crichton was stopped.
