Baker Cup

Bridgwater and Albion 40, Weston 12.

Report by Tony Pomeroy for Bridgwater Mercury

BRIDGWATER and Albion put both hands on the Baker Cup with this comprehensive second victory in the series, However, the cup will only be presented when it is found.

It was last played for many years ago between Bridgwater and Weston but nobody can recall the whereabouts of the cup itself or even who won it last.

If you can help, please contact the Bridgwater club office.

Albion fielded an almost entirely different XV to the one that played Taunton two days previously, but with a similar outcome to the game.

In front of a disappointingly small crowd on a very cold evening, both sides served up good holiday entertainment.

With no tannoy and no scoreboard operator, some of the crowd lost count of the score.

Even the referee had to ask the score at the end.

The first 15 minutes were fairly even as both sides adjusted to the mix of players in their team.

Cold hands were not conducive to good handling and so mistakes abounded.

Bridgwater opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when, following a scrum on the left deep in Weston’s 22, the ball was fed to Alex Lloyd, who romped over in the corner.

Luke Cozens’ conversion drifted wide of the posts.

The game then became rather lively.

Former Bridgwater centre Sean Bennett, now plying his trade at Weston, cynically took out Dave Kimberley off the ball and was lucky his actions were not penalised by the officials.

Minutes later a Bridgwater penalty was reversed when a touch judge spotted some Danny Hodge skulduggery at a ruck.

Craig McGrath then brought the crowd to its feet.

He ripped the ball from a maul on halfway and sprinted through a non-existent defence.

As he approached the line he visibly slowed and was almost caught but just managed to reach over the line and touch down under the posts as he was tackled. Cozens converted easily.

Mark Armstrong almost caught Albion’s defence napping when he took a tap penalty instead of the expected touch kick but the defence held out.

Weston were then reduced to 14 men when Craig Trump was sent to the bin – and during his absence Bridgwater gathered 14 points.

First skipper Ben Purcell, making the most of a missing flanker, crashed over following a five-metre scrum and then the crowd saw a candidate for try of the season.

Albion kicked deep into the Weston 22 and Ryan Hellier, following up at speed, forced a hurried kick out of defence.

Steve Hunt caught the ball cleanly and set out on a diagonal run.

With Purcell and Lee Massey also involved, the ball eventually reached Lloyd, who cruised over for a superb try.

Both were converted by Cozens for a half-time lead of 26-0.

Weston opened the half by surprising the home side. Wing Kirk Middlemass intercepted a Bridgwater pass on the halfway line and sprinted away to score in the corner, before Armstrong converted with a superb kick.

A 40-metre Matt Britton break from a midfield scrum gave an indication he was returning to full fitness, but with a try looming the ball was lost.

Bridgwater kept up the pressure and with the home pack disrupting a Weston scrummage, Purcell charged over for his second try, again converted by Cozens.

Paul Sprague got a consolation try for the visitors before Mike Mangeolles wrapped up the evening with a fine individual effort, scything through the defence in a 40-metre arcing run.

Cozens’ conversion was the final act of a very competitive game, enjoyed by all who watched it.
