Weston-super-Mare took maximum league points for their final league game of the season away from home after the visitors went into the break 15-8 ahead following tries from scrum-half Dan Lomax and full back Jack Curtis.
Fly-half James Mackay converted the first and added a penalty with the home side replying through a try from hooker Phil Bardwell. In his 100th first-team appearance, wing Huw Morgan was yellow carded on 29 minutes, and full-back Tom Fieldsend added a penalty.
Into the second period and back to full strength, Mackay added a second penalty before adding the extras to his half back partner Lomax's second try. RWB then had No.8 Josh McCafferty sent for ten minutes in the sin bin.
No sooner had he returned to the action than Bardwell was shown yellow, which meant the game went to uncontested scrums. Weston took advantage of the extra player with centre Cameron Maslen bursting through for the bonus point try, which Mackay converted.
McCafferty was sent off for his second yellow card offence in the final minutes of the game. But Bardwell still had time to claim his second try, converted by Fieldsend who had been forced to switch to flanker in the closing stages.
Royal Wootton Bassett may be propping-up the Tribute South West Premier table but they tested their visitors on numerous occasions with their running rugby. Probably an ideal preparation for Weston’s visit of neighbours Hornets on Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
Captain Tom Sugg should be available for selection for the big local derby game having completed the World Rugby’s Concussion Protocol and the Graduated Return To Play programme.
