Weston are severely University Challenged

Report by Chris Heath

Tribute South West Premier’s league leaders Exeter University proved too strong for Weston-super-Mare as the students took maximum points to complete a season's double over the Seasiders.

After their very close encounter earlier in the season, Weston-super-Mare hoped to avenge their defeat at Topsham, but Exeter University proved too strong as they took maximum points to complete a season's double.

All hopes faded early on as the students showed why they are leading the Tribute South West Premier table with a superb display of fast fifteen man rugby which the hosts had no answer.

Some of the six tries the visitors plundered were excellent, while others were soft against a Weston team who prides itself on its defence.

Weston managed to score tries when a good move from a line out carried on by No.8 Ben Cox ended with centre Cameron Maslen going under the posts, which cut the score to five points when fly-half James Mackay converted.

The second came right at the end of the game when wing Huw Morgan, redeployed to the centre, made a forty-metre break that ended with replacement prop Charlie Kearns feeding left-wing Joe Burgess to cross the whitewash.

Mackay's conversion was the final act of a very disappointing display against what must be said the best team that Weston have faced this season. Despite the defeat, the Seasiders remain fourth in the table, but they are next away to third-placed Old Redcliffians, who have a 19-point cushion.

Weston-super-Mare scorers - tries: Cameron Maslen, Joe Burgess; cons: James Mackay (2)

Exeter University scorers - tries: James Botterill, Kor Barton-Bayfield (2), Niall Armstrong, John Bailey, Charlie McCaig; cons: Josh Barton (3)
