20 - 17

(HT 3-11)

Weston-super-Mare RFC

Tribute South West Premier

Hornets 20 Weston-super Mare 17

The early exchanges and arm wrestle by both packs were to nullify each other and the pressure from both defences forced errors both ways and it took a while until the first score which was for Hornets full back Charlie Carter to kick his first points of the day on the occasion of his 200th Cap. 3-0

Hornets were fully aware of their Neighbours quality and Weston attacked and looked strong and this eventually led to a penalty kick at goal for James Mackay who put the scores level. 3-3

Weston now seemed to be taking control as they put plenty of phases together and Mackay was allowed another shot at goal and Weston were in front. 3-6

Now with their tails up Weston set about searching for a try and the inevitable try came out on the wing by Joe Burgess and Weston went into the break in front. 3-11

Hornets knew that they had to step up and they did and started to play some of the rugby they have been used to and the quick ball was shipped and Weston were struggling to contain the attacks, another shot at goal for Carter and the gap closed to a score.6-11

Now with renewed confidence Hornets came again and the score was to follow as Jon Roberts went over and Carter's conversion put Hornets back in front.13-11.

With time ebbing away another series of attacks and Mackay had another penalty which put Weston back in front. 13-14

More pressure from a now confident Weston and another shot at goal for Mackay and Weston looked in a strong winning position.13-17

Hornets though weren’t ready to give up their winning run and surged, a large roar went up as Alec Chase finished off a lineout with the try converted by Carter and only a couple of minutes left and a nail-biting time for all. 20-17.

Weston knew they had to throw everything back at Hornets and in the final seconds were awarded a penalty kick at goal.

As Mackay lined up the kick everyone in the crowd discussed that a draw was probably a fair result in expectation of the kick going over but to the delight of the Hornets team and supporters the kick sailed wide and the ref blew the final whistle.
