Weston gain hard earned victory
Weston travelled to the Forest of Dean in confident mood following their recent form and came away with a hard earned victory.
Drybrook started well regaining their own kick off and making large inroads into Weston territory and it was only a fantastic tackle by right wing Ollie Walrond that prevented the hosts taking a very early lead. Eventually Drybrook gave away a pressure relieving penalty which the visitors used to clear their lines.
This new found defensive solidity led to the game’s opening points when fullback Jack Curtis fielded a high kick and started a fine move in which both forwards and backs were involved in a move of the highest order leading to Curtis eventually crossing wide out on the left.
Fly-half Dan Lomax missed the extras but made amends with a well taken penalty soon after to put Weston eight points up. Drybrook cut the lead to five soon after but Lomax kicked another three pointer soon after.
It was just after this that Drybrook who had already lost their hooker to injury were further hindered when their prop also has to leave the field resulting in uncontested scrums.
The referee deemed that the hosts had no need to lose a player after this so a powerful Weston weapon was blunted.
Weston were shell shocked for the remainder of the half but the break seemed to galvanise them and the first twenty minutes of the second period showed that this team has a steely resolve.
Replacement flanker Jack Woodland who joined the fray shortly before the break for Mark Turton started the momentum when his excellent break led to left wing Joe Burgess providing a scissor pass to outstanding blindside Sam Fisher who crashed over.
More pressure nearly gave Weston a further score when Burgess crossed wide out only to be ruled out by a forward pass.
Weston were however now in the groove and persistent offending led to the hosts at one stage being reduced to thirteen players. One when live wire scrum half JJ Williams taking a quick tap only to be stopped from crossing by a head high tackle which resulted in a yellow card but only a penalty.
Weston then looked to have scored again but hooker Gary Carpenter's effort was again ruled out but a penalty given. The pressure told eventually when Williams went blind from yet another uncontested scrum to give Walrond the simplest of tries.
This was a culmination of some tremendous play by Weston involving both forwards and backs with captain Tom Sugg leading from the front and the front row of Sam Coles Carpenter and Ollie Streeter overcoming their evident disappointment of not being able to do what they enjoy doing and providing some excellent go forward.ball.
With Sugg and the ever consistent Ashley Russell providing good ball Weston looked as though they might run away with the game.
To their credit Drybrook stuck with it and we’re rewarded with a try late on to reduce the deficit but it was too little too late and Weston came away with a victory which deserved a bonus point but having to settle for four points.
As well as the forwards the centre partnership of Cameron Maslen and Huw Morgan are showing promising signs and with the exciting Williams and off the cuff Curtis the back play is beginning to look an exciting prospect.
Whilst not having much to do Walrond and Burgess also played their part both in attack and defence and look solid prospects for the future.
