BOURNEMOUTH 35 WESTON SUPER MARE 11

report by Chris Heath

Weston travelled to the South Coast for their first league fixture in what seems a lifetime and came away with a heavy defeat which flatters the home side although they definitely deserved to win.

Weston had five debutants in the squad in eighteen year old scrum half Jack Press nineteen year old hooker Chris Burton twenty year old back Ollie Walrond and twenty one year old full back Jack Curtis along with prop Sol Ward.

The visitors actually started very well and within five minutes had taken the lead. A pinpoint kick to the left hand touch line by centre James Mackay following a penalty led to a forward rumble which though initially thwarted eventually allowed Mackay to throw a superb pass to right wing Chris Young who gleefully darted over.

That was as good as it got for Weston though and although Mackay and fly half Dan Lomax added penalties Weston paid the price for their undoubted rustiness with a constant bout of elementary mistakes when in promising positions allowing the hosts to capitalise through well taken tries and an unerring boot when penalised anywhere within the Weston half.

There were definitely positive moments in the game and hopefully with more experience of playing together the mistakes will get fewer and more chances will be taken.
