Weston Colts 7 Keynsham Colts 19
Thunder, lightening, rain, wind and finally hail could not prevent an entertaining afternoons rugby at The Rec
If Keynsham arrived thinking that the result was a foregone conclusion after their 59-0 win at the start of the season then it would have not taken long to have realised that the same side was not the same team.
Playing into a strong wind first half Weston worked their way into the Keynsham half with some good strong running and quick ball.
Keynsham's well organised defence did not look threatened and very soon they made use of the wind to pin Weston into their 22.
This Weston team is not as easy to run through and despite having some heavy runners pounding through the middle it was not until after several phases that they ran in a try on the right wing which to be fair was expertly converted.
With the wind strengthening and the rain intermittently lashing across the pitch almost horizontally the only way to work up the pitch was to run it, led by captain Dom Marshall.
That's exactly what Weston did, it was not pretty and the wingers has to keep their hands warm and ready for the occasional ball that reached them.
After 23 minutes of pressure the Weston defence broke, but that was it for the half and they turned round 12-0 down.
With the wind at their backs and Jack Press orchestrating play at scrum half it was Keynsham's turn to defend, a lesser side would have conceded.
Keynsham toiled under Weston pressure, they were lucky not to lose a player for repeated infringements at the break down.
Bradley Robinson on the left wing was bundled into touch as the line beckoned, he then unluckily spilled the ball as he was being bundled over by team mates.
Not to worry, Keynsham had gone offside and Weston went again, first Tom Burge charged forward, the ball came back again, Hayden Main ran a typically elusive line to get score which Jack Press converted.
Keynsham's players were falling over left right and centre such was their effort in the physical confrontation being brought to bear by Weston player who were playing without fear and with some skill in difficult conditions.
Keynsham's defence held firm, the game swung on one run from deep by the Keynsham full back as the game entered the final quarter. Keynsham's forwards then took over and they pummelled the Weston defence from close range before scoring the final points of the afternoon.
Yes it was a defeat, but there is no doubt that this Colts side are on the up, they should take a great deal of pride with their recent performances, as should their coaches who have been the architects of the teams style of play.
