WESTON SUPER MARE 31 NEWBURY 15

report by ChrIs Heath

Weston were at the races early against their Berkshire opponents.

A superb break by right wing Alex Howman and a quick recycle enabled returning scrum half Kadin Brocks to launch a long pass which sent prolific number eight Brad Talbot under the sticks.

Fly half Dan Lomax added the extras. Newbury hit back with a penalty but the hosts increased their lead when the rampaging Talbot popped a classy pass to lock Ash Russell.

A disputed forward pass by Brocks to Howman prevented Weston from adding to their tally and this seemed to unsettle them.

A period of sustained Newbury pressure was thwarted time and time again by some superb defence and through this team effort they finally regained possession.

A great break by returning Captain Marcus Nel followed by an audacious kick off the outside of his boot enabled Howman to gather to cross for the hosts third try. Lomax added the extras.

The second half was a more mundane affair after Weston secured their bonus point score when an opportunist grubba by Nel bounced kindly back off the post straight into the gleeful skippers hands giving a third conversion for Lomax.

A deserved try by Newbury number eight Josh Winfield cut the lead but a fifth try finished classily by replacement full back Ross Bennett after another Howman charge put the hosts out of sight.

Newbury scored a late consolation through right wing Tommy Martin which fly half Thorne converted to add to his early penalty but it was too little too late.

For Weston the forwards all fronted up with last season’s skipper Sam Coles to the fore along with veterans flanker Rich Bignall and lock Russell.

Talbot once again adding the X factor.

In the backs Brocks and Howman along with Nel but there were accomplished performances by both left wing Mitch Salisbury and full back George Chapman.
