National League Three South
WESTON-SUPER-MARE 15pts REDRUTH 18 pts
PLAYING with total commitment, Redruth overcame a very robust challenge on the Drove Road Recreation Ground to defeat Weston-super-Mare for the first time in a league fixture.
The Reds defeated Weston in the Powergen Cup competition in September and when the sides clashed for league points the Reds were beaten by Weston in a tight match by four points.
It was a hard-earned win with Redruth defended excellently as the "Seasiders" hammered away at the Reds tryline in the closing stages.
At the moment under the coaching of James Lancaster, Nigel Hambly and David Penberthy, Redruth are showing form and commitment.
Good goalkicking from the boot of Scott Martin has earned him his place and he finished with 13 points.
The other try scorer for the Reds was the in-form flanker James Lancaster.
Full Back Reid added the extras and minutes later Reid kicked a penalty for a ten-point lead.
Redruth began to make use of ample possession, but let themselves down with some indifferent passing.
When the referee penalised the home side, Martin got the Reds' scoreboard ticking with a successful kick.
Coming back into the play through good team play, James Lancaster scored, but Martin could not convert as Weston's lead was cut to 10-8..
Weston had a chance to extend their lead at the start of the second half, but Reid fired wide.
After just two minutes on the pitch, prop forward Steele, who had replaced Swann, scored a try, but Reid missed the conversion.
The Reds were looking good at times and in the line outs, Neil Corin playing at lock, dominated, and this gave the Reds options.
However, on his return, home prop Mervyn Down was red carded following a skirmish. Down was guilty of punching and Martin kicked the penalty.
Britton, in the home midfield, halted Thirlby who needed close marking as did his partner Craig Bonds who with a nifty dummy sent in Martin for a try which he also converted for a three point lead.
The Reds were not quite home yet, especially when they were penalised. Reid failed with his kick and Dick Bird, the home skipper, held his head in his hands.
The Reds were still under pressure, but kept, cool and calm to win the match, a tremendous team effort.
The Reds hung on and deserved the crowd's applause at the final whistle.
