Tribute Somerset Premier
Weston United 29 Tor 7
Weston United returned to action this week having had no game for the previous fortnight. Tor were the visitors to The Rec with storm Brian making an unwanted appearance just as kick off approached.
Game underway with the hosts playing into the gust and looking like they’d rather be watching telly in front the fire. The visitors right up for it and looking dangerous with strong runners making ground.
Weston bouncing off tackles not helping and after 8 minutes it was Tor who crossed first for a converted try. Weston needed to roll up their sleeves and get back into shape and this is exactly what they did.
A good passage of play seeing Weston move the ball wide, Bennett kicking ahead and the ball bouncing his way for his and Weston’s first of the day. Conversion missed 5-7.
Weston lost Burns shortly after with Sprague coming on and Weston started to get on top. Tor were still running hard but the hosts looked more threatening with the ball.
On the half hour Mike Hocking crossed following a catch and drive close in to give Weston the lead. Weston then lost Troy Hannam with Bryan Webb coming in and then just before the break Ross Bennett intercepted to race clear. George Chapman converted and Weston led 17-7 at the break.
Half time and Weston focusing on playing the second half inside Tor territory with the high winds not relenting. 15 minutes in and Bennett completed his hat trick with some nifty footwork our wide, conversion missed and Weston then looked out of sight.
The second half was played mostly in the right areas of the pitch for Weston with Tor defending well. Last 10 and Weston deservedly crossed again when the excellent Ramaz Rukhadze drove over after some excellent work by the pack. Chapman converted 29-7.
Time for another injury with Kyran Marshall coming off for Burns to return and just as things were looking up for him, Bryan Webb picked up a yellow card. He’s consistent if nothing else!
All in all it was job done for Weston who will be pleased with a 5 try performance against a really strong and physical Tor side. It will not be long before they are back to winning ways based on this showing.
Good shifts this week from Ramaz Rukhadze who was outstanding in the loose, Callum Kingscott who caught everything and showed great workrate and Jacob Cox who was a menance all day at the breakdown.
Man of the Match this week was skipper Ross Bennett who had an outstanding afternoon, scored three tries and led the team superbly. Next week we are on the road to Stothert. A good showing at training required.
Weston United scorers - tries: Ross Bennett (3), Mike Hocking, Ramaz Rukhadze; cons: George Chapman (2); yellow card: Bryan Webb (79 min)
