Tribute Somerset Premier
Old Redcliffians 2ndXV 23 Weston United 21
Report by Chris Heath
After skipper Andrew Glen won the toss and elected to play up the slope Weston started reasonably well with lock Sam Light carrying well in the early stages.
However a bad mistake in midfield allowed Reds to open the scoring with a well taken try. Weston were getting penalised often and despite some good defence Reds eventually scored a converted try to put the hosts twelve points to the good.
Weston hit back and after several attempts by the forwards near the home line they crossed the line only for the ref to disallow the effort and give Reds yet another penalty.
Weston then messed up another opportunity when after not allowing Reds to escape from inside their dead ball area Reds took one against the head to clear.
Another catch and drive from a rock solid line out with hooker Mike Hocking's darts on fine form was ended with a familiar shrill from the officials whistle.
It looked as if despite Weston being strong in the set piece with tight head prop Toby Hill in outstanding form Westons ill discipline and bad decision making was going to cost them.
This was further exacerbated when shocking defence at the start of the second half allowed the home side to extend their lead to seventeen points.
Then something happened. Weston were awarded a rare penalty which gave them a line out near the home line. Lots of picks and gos and the decision to keep hammering away at Reds line paid dividends when Light finally crossed to open the scoring for the visitors.
Fly half George Chapman converted and straight from the kick off lock Callum Kingscott made a half break and offloaded to a relocated Bryan Webb who broke down the middle before kicking ahead.
He then made a tackle on the Reds fullback and the hosts were unable to get out from under their posts. Weston were awarded a five meter scrum and their dominance was rewarded by a penalty try after Reds collapsed over their line.
Webb was then yellow carded and Reds kicked a penalty to go six points up but Weston weren't finished and were soon down the other end and following a charge down and break by wing Mike McCarthy, Kingscott crossed to put Weston one point in arrears.
Chapman expertly converted from wide out to give Weston the lead for the first time with only a few minutes reamaining.
But somewhat predictably Weston gave a penalty away straight from the restart and after chatting to the ref were taken back ten metres to make a difficult kick relatively straight forward.
This proved to be the case and although Weston nearly scored again at the death it was they who were the architects of their own downfall in the end in a game they really should have won.
Weston United scorers - tries: Sam Light, Callum Kingscott, pen try; cons: G Chapman (2), pen try con; yellow card: Bryan Webb (58 min)
