Camborne 29 Weston-super-Mare 7

Match Report by Martin Symons from Camborne website

Camborne deservedly claimed a vital bonus point victory with a much improved performance to see off the challenge of Weston Super Mare on a heavy Recreation Ground pitch.

It was a dream start for newly reappointed Director of Rugby Liam Chapple who was able to bolster his pack with returning locks Damien Cook and Ben Kemp back together in the Cherry & Whites engine room.

After an even first quarter a superb 50 metre break by centre Declan Matthews set up a position in the turnstile corner for the opening try. The forwards drove purposefully from a close range lineout with James Goldsworthy steering the maul over for the touchdown.

Not long after Camborne worked a similar corner position and this time powerhouse lock Kemp back after more than a year’s injury lay off crashed over. David Mankee converted for 12-0.

The Cherry & Whites then failed to gather the restart giving the visitors an attacking scrum from where play eventually ended with their hooker burrowing over. The regulation conversion was knocked over to cut the deficit to five points.

The home side soon took play back up the slope and stretched their advantage with a simple penalty from in front of the posts by fly half Mankee when Weston halted an attack illegally.

Soon after outstanding No 8 Goldsworthy completed his brace of tries again dotting down from an unstoppable forwards surge. Mankee stroked over an excellent conversion to make it 22-7 at the interval.

With the wind at their backs in the 2nd half Weston searched for a try to get back in the match but again and again met resolute home tackling.

Inside the final quarter ‘Town’ urged on by their supporters on the West Bank bagged their bonus point score. Patient phases of attack were repeatedly repelled by the visitors before finally elusive full back Harvey Bell broke through a tackle to romp over.

Mankee’s conversion took his side out of sight and the game ended with Weston striving fruitlessly for a consolation try.

Camborne face another crucial game this weekend when they make the long trip to Newbury who are also scrapping for points at the wrong end of the South West Premier table.
