Fail to Prepare, Prepare to Fail
Weston's Develoment squad were given a lesson this weekend as they were 2nd best all over the park to a hungry Walcot side.
Weston can look as far back as their meet at the club as an indication as to how the day would pan out with only 9 making the meet time.
The knock on effects were a late arrival on ground, and with some people managing to get lost between the M4 and Walcot's ground it meant that we had 25 minutes to prepare as a squad.
Compare that to the Walcot side who were out a good hour before the game and it was clear which side were ready to play. As the weather dipped in between glorious sunshine and ridiculous downpour it was the visitors who started well when auxillary winger PJ Grimes outpaced the defence to collect Dan Prime's perfectly weighted cross kick and score in the corner with only 3 minutes on the clock.
But if Weston's start was impressive, Walcot's response was equally impressive. 3 minutes later they levelled the scores following some slap-dash tackling in Weston's midfield. Try converted.
And then 3 minutes later they doubled their lead when more missed tackles resulted in a well worked try and conversion. 14-5.
Weston fought for parity, but with isolated runners being turned over Walcot were never in danger.
They added their 3rd try of the match on 22 minutes when Weston contrived to make a mess of their lineout and were caught offside.
As Weston looked around at each other, Walcot tapped and went and crashed over. Try converted. 21-5.
Towards the end of the half Weston had their best period of the match when they at last began to move the ball. A series of penalties and lineouts close in could well have resulted in a try, but solid defence and a couple of errors by Weston meant that no further scores were added.
Second half and Weston looking to mount a comeback, but any thoughts were short lived. Walcot scoring a breakaway try on 48 minutes, before a 5th on 58 minutes.
With Weston having no choice but to take chances they at last moved the ball to space and created opportunities.
A four man overlap created and Charley Hearne was able to score in the corner, despite a good effort by a couple of players to make a mess of it.
Conversion added and Weston chasing the possibiltiy of a bonus point with 2 tries in the last 10.
However, as was the story of the day, it was Walcot who in fact managed it when they scored almost immediately from the restart before a great individual try by their impressive outside half put the icing on the cake.
Final score 43-12.
Weston can have no complaints today. They were outplayed, missed too many tackles and werent able to implement a game plan.
This is a great learning tool for the lads involved. Despite this there were several positives for Weston to take in next week's game against league leaders Midsomer Norton.
Chris Leigh and Henry Bigwood made impressive debuts for the club, whilst the club will be delighted to see the return of Ollie Trott following a long lay off with injury.
Josh Wheeler was the pick of the backline with some strong running and leading the way defensively, whilst Kieran Shelley worked his socks off in the pack.
Man of the match was Ben Craddock who never failed to get over the gain line with strong direct running and a commited effort in defence. Beauty!!
