Weston-super-Mare RFC

Tribute Somerset Premier

Old Redcliffians 15 Weston United 29

This match away to Old Red’s was always hoing to be a tough encounter, and a game of 2 halves with the sloping pitch. However, a bonus point win was secured despite the frustrations of conceding the first tries of the season.

The first half was disjointed with patches of brilliance. One superb passage from first phase ball saw the Weston backs carve open the defence with excellent hands and interchanges, with the eventual try to Chapman; who also added the extras.

Red’s then responded with two tries of their own (one converted) and a penalty, with Chapman also adding a penalty. 15-10 at half time… however, should have been more had Sam Light not run all the way over the dead ball line to put the ball down!! Apologies for my clear frustration from the sideline Lighty…!!

Clearly the half time reflection on what had preceded spurned the United into action, with the second half being a more one-sided affair. Adam Godfrey playing out of position on the wing had an outstanding man of the match performance that promoted him to the 1s the following week.

Tries came from Huw Morgan in usual butter knife style, Callum Kingscott from short range after more sweeping movement, and Dan Lomax after he latched onto a dropped ball and somehow managed to outpace the covering defence… groin all ok now Dan? Lomax added the extras.

Red’s carried well through their hooker, centre and back row but the defence held strong. In particular Dave Steele who’d replace Billy Kirk (feeling unwell but still put in a shift) holding up a couple of players to secure turnover ball. 29-15 the final score, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief!
