Tribute Somerset Premier
Weston United 27 St Bernadettes Old Boys 3
In the last fixture of the year Weston were looking to continue their recent run of good form and finish on a high against their South Bristol opponents.
Weston started the game at an electric pace leaving Bernadettes confused and not knowing where to look for the next attack. A trademark catch and drive from a penalty advantage by Callum Kingscott at the lineout led to flanker James Matthews scoring the first try.
A replication of this seven minutes later led to number 8 Simon Hudson going over in the corner.
For the last twenty minutes prior to the break Weston went off the boil and it was now Bernadettes turn to attack the Weston line. The home sides defence held firm and all the away team had to show for their efforts was a penalty kick as Weston went in at half time leading 10-3.
At the start of the second half Matthews scored his second of the match which was a carbon copy of his first. Matthews then gave way for colt Jacob Cox to make his second team debut.
Scrum half Ben Searle who had his best game to date was now making inroads with sniping breaks and it was Searle who scored next for the bonus point try.
Bernadettes looked to have secured the ball near to their try line only then for them to knock it on providing Searle with an early Christmas present and George Chapman added the extras.
Weston then lost Chapman with a head injury that later required hospital treatment, but Snake hips Jon Filer was able to fill in at fly half and made some great breaks.
The last try of the game was the best of the lot as Filer made a break to then offload to supporting centre Huw Morgan to collect the pass and score the try.
This was a fine team performance from Weston. The pack were solid, with Will Hunt, Joe Pullen and Ross Chesher working particularly hard all game. Searle set the tone for the backs and Morgan impressed in attack and defence.
Weston can now enjoy their festive break and are well placed in the league following a maximum haul of twenty points from their last four matches.
