Tribute Somerset Premier
Minehead Barbarians 12 Weston United 24
Weston pack set the foundations in poor conditions....
Weston knew that their journey to Minehead was not going to be an afternoon of flowing rugby, what with the rain lashing down, a strong blustery cross wind and a pitch sporting outrageously long grass.....it soon became obvious it would be a battle of the packs.
Minehead were first to score when they elected a kick to the corner from a penalty infringement by the Weston pack. The lineout was overthrown by their hooker but they somehow still managed to cross the line for a converted try.
Weston responded ten minutes later with a George Chapman penalty after Minehead conceded a penalty at the scrum. Weston went in 7-3 down at the break, but having had most of the possession in the first half the players were confident of turning things around in the second half.
The Weston pack now had the upper hand and looked much fitter than their heavier opponents. Weston elected a scrum from a penalty and Chapman then switched play and attacked the blind channel to find winger Adam Godfrey who scored a fine try. Conversion added by Chapman.
Five minutes later it was the turn of fellow winger Mitch Salisbury to score. A good turnover by replacement flanker Rich Johnston put the winger away for an impressive try. Chapman adding the extras.
Weston the lost Paul Morrissey to a yellow card and Minehead took advantage of the numerical difference scoring from a driving maul and thought they had snatched a losing bonus point from the match. Chapman put an end to this thought as he then rounded off his fine afternoon, after a catch and drive at the lineout by the pack, he made an illusive break to score a quality individual try which he then converted.
The Weston pack worked tirelessly throughout and in particular prop Jake Whatley and Second row Ben Cradock who grafted all game. Winger Godfrey also put in some thunderous tackles and the commitment and desire from all could not be questioned. This was a solid win in poor conditions and a good platform to take into the local derby against Hornets on Friday night.
