Tribute Somerset Premier
Weston United 10 Yatton 19
Weston United welcomed unbeaten league leaders Yatton to the Recreation ground knowing they would be in for a tough afternoon against a side who have been scoring tries for fun.
Weston started the brightest and fly half George Chapman converted an easy penalty after the third minute but unfortunately he could not double his tally nine minutes later with an even easier kick.
After this, Yatton applied some considerable pressure that the Weston side managed to absorb with a great display of defensive work that was led by hard waking centre Huw Morgan and young second row Callum Kingscott.
After half an hour Yatton scored an unconverted try through their impressive inside centre who broke from inside his own half against the run of play. On the stroke of half time Yatton added three more as the Weston backs were caught offside and they headed into the break leading 3-8.
Weston started the second half poorly as a sloppy kick down field was fielded by the Yatton fullback who ran it back with pace to score in the corner for a fine individual score. A rare sight then occurred as Yatton kicked a drop goal to keep the score board ticking over and then soon added another three as Weston gave away more penalties.
With ten minutes remaining it was all Weston as they went in search of trying to get something from the game. Hooker Joe Pullen made an outstanding break from inside his own half evading several would be tacklers to then superbly offload to veteran winger Paul Sprague to score under the posts and Chapman added the extras.
Sadly Weston left it too late and ran out of time. The players will be frustrated not to have got anything from this as they certainly deserved a losing bonus point at the very least.
Weston will be concerned at the amount of lineouts they lost although this was a much improved performance and the passion and enjoyment appears to be back.
