Tribute Somerset Premier
Winscombe 32 Weston United 13
Winscombe have been a top three side in the Somerset Premier league now for a few seasons, so Weston knew that this afternoon would not be a quiet day at the office.
Winscombe took the lead with an early penalty kick which was soon cancelled out by Weston fly half Dan Lomax who kicked a superb long range goal.
The away side then conceded a try in the corner following a simple catch and drive at the lineout and now trailed 8-3.
Weston were then to lose two forwards to injury in the space of seven minutes which seemed to disrupt their pack at set pieces.
Just before half time Winscombe scored a converted try as they managed to recycle the ball following a great tackle by Mitch Salisbury.
Weston now trailed 15-3 at the break.
Weston scored first in the second half. A great break by winger Ollie Caton who raced up field with intent and was tackled just short of the line. The players didn't panic and Salisbury secured the ball to allow Caton the final pass to crash over the line and score.
More disruption to the Weston side then saw Lomax and Blaine Tottle having to leave the field and this along with the early injuries contributed to Winscombe scoring a further three tries.
Weston did manage a consolation score and it was the best try of the afternoon as the impressive Caton superbly ran the ball out of his own half beating several defenders on the way to the line before popping it to supporting hooker Joe Pullen to score.
Weston made far too many handling mistakes from their set pieces and the pack were unable to provide the platform and quick ball that the backs required.
Second row Andy Glen had a fine afternoon in attack and always got over the gain line and made some solid hits in defence. Flanker James Matthews also impressed on his return to the side.
Winger Caton was the best player on the park by some distance and he made a huge contribution to the match.
Weston know Winscombe are a beatable side as they did the double over them last season, but they need to get over this loss quickly and return back to winning ways.
