Tribute Somerset Premier
Weston United 26 Stothert & Pitt 31
The scoreline from this game does not reflect the dominance Stothert had nor does it reflect how poor Weston were.
Weston started the game the stronger side and were first to score when a superbly judged cross field kick by George Chapman found winger Ollie Caton who managed to catch the ball and score in the corner, conversion missed.
This score seemed to wake Stothert up as in the space of twelve minutes they scored 16 points from two tries and two penalties. Weston could not deal with the sustained pressure from Stothert and gave away countless penalties during this process and can consider themselves extremely lucky not to have had a player sent to the sin bin.
Weston then ended the half as they had started and scored a try through flanker Ben Cox following a determined and strong carry by centre Sylvan Edwards, Chapman added the conversion and Weston trailed 12-16 at half time.
Stothert started the second half with great urgency and were soon scoring their third try of the game through their centre who side stepped his way to the line through some poor tackling.
Edwards then made another barn storming run up field to put Weston in a great attacking position and as the ball was spread wide Caton knocked it on with the try line beckoning.
Weston then conceded two further unconverted tries as they tired, one of which was again by the impressive Stothert centre who Weston failed to deal with all game. Weston now trailed 12-31 and there were only five minutes to play.
Weston ended the match the stronger side and from a penalty advantage hooker Harry Nash scrambled over from a quick tap and Chapman converted.
Deep into injury time and a carbon copy of his first, Nash soon scored again following sustained forward pressure and Chapman added the extras.
Weston somehow came away with two bonus points from this defeat mainly down to the fact that the Stothert kicker had an off day with the boot.
Veteran Paul Sprague, winger Caton and captain Ollie Trott can be happy with their efforts in a game where Weston lacked passion, urgency and aggression.
Weston will be looking to improve next Saturday when they visit Old Reds and can hopefully draw a line under this poor team performance.
