Tribute Somerset 2 North

Weston Athletic 22 Midsomer Norton 2ndXV 27

Weston Athletic began their game full of energy and on the attack but the very large Midsomer forwards absorbed the pressure.

Midsomer used the strong breeze to good effect and set up an attack near the Weston line. A catch and drive from a line out and a move on the blindside brought their first try.

Athletic used their superior backs and moved the ball out wide. Morgan, who looked dangerous all game, broke through the Midsomer defence to score near the post and with Primes conversion Athletic took the lead.

The Midsomer pack set up a driving maul that was too powerful for Weston and they were driven over their line, the Midsomer number eight touching down. The extras were missed and Weston were soon back on level terms with a penalty by Prime.

The visiting forwards exerted their weight advantage again and their effort resulted in a third unconverted try.

After the break there was more pressure from the Midsomer forwards and another unconverted try. It looked as though Weston might be in for a hiding but they rallied with great spirit and exerted their own pressure which resulted in a charge down of a clearance kick by Prime who followed up and scored a deserved try for Weston.

He converted and Weston were still in touch at 17 - 20. The Midsomer forwards rumbled up the pitch again and bullied their way over the line near the posts for a converted try.

Credit to the Athletic as they didn't give up and they ran everything at Midsomer. McCarthy and Stuart combined well down the wing and McCarthy forced his way over for a try and with the conversion narrowly missed the game was within Weston Athletics reach.

The last 10 minutes was all Weston but Midsomer's defence held and they ran out winners by 22-27, Weston having to be content with a losing bonus point.
