Oldfield Old Boys 2ndXV 24 Weston Athletic 30

The Athletic opened their account with a bonus point away win in a keenly and closely contested game.

From the kick off Weston’s forwards won three phases of possession and twice the backs set up good attacks. From quick possession the ball was moved out and full back Jamie Russell came in to the line and scorched his way to the try line for the opening score with less than 2 minutes on the clock.

Oldfield were not put off by this early set back and came back strongly. In a 20 minute period and with the Weston backs not getting their defensive alignment right, Oldfield scored three tries to take a 19 – 5 lead.

Athletic managed to sort their defence out and following a long kick from Prime, Stuart forced the Oldfield defence into a mistake,. He won the ball and forced his way over for a try on 34 minutes.

From the restart Weston attacked again and Henry Monelle was on hand to score a good try following recycled possession from the forwards. Prime converted the try and the first half finished with the athletic just trailing by 19-17.

In the second half the Weston pack began to dominate and Elliot Monelle scored after a good driving maul and a move on the narrow side. Weston had regained the lead but a break out against the run of play saw Oldfield in the lead by 24-22 with 20 minutes remaining.

The last 20 saw Weston dominate up front with driving mauls and some excellent running by forwards and backs. A penalty for Weston was kicked for the corner and from the line out the Weston forwards drove the opposition back over their line with Bird getting the try.

The conversion was narrowly missed by Prime but he was on hand just 3 minutes later to seal the game with a penalty just 30 metres out following an Oldfield infringement as the Weston pack were going forward with another driving maul.

Weston were deserved winners in a tight and very sporting encounter. Debutant Jack Wilcox at prop had a great game with some excellent carries, several excellent tackles and a performance at tight head that got better as the game went on.
