Weston-super-Mare RFC
Old Redcliffians RFC

National League 3 South West

Westson-super-Mare 20 pts Old Redcliffiaans 21 pts

Westson-super-Mare left it too late against fellow strugglers Old Redcliffians.

They did not really come alive until stoppage time at the Recreation Ground and a brace of tries in three minutes was not quite good enough, and they finished a single point short.

The Seasiders had been eight points to the good by the half-hour, new full-back Nauris Birzins scoring their first try and centre Jack Skelton adding a penalty. But the Reds replied just before the break.

Skelton’s penalty attempt five minutes into the second half struck a post and Steer failed twice before Stevens touched down crucially for Steer to convert.

Things got even worse for the hosts when Reds went to 8-21 when Steer added the extras to a try by his brother Sam with three minutes of normal time remaining.

But as time added arrived, Weston, at last, started to play. A driven line-out provided an unconverted try for hooker Craig Withers and in the 83rd minute, centre Sylvan Edwards scored splendidly to finish off a superb individual break.

Skelton converted but the Seasiders had run out of time, and had to be content with a losing bonus point.

This was another disappointing performance by Weston and it was a pity that they did not come into the match until it was too late.
