Old Culverhaysians 16 Weston Athletic 27

The final match of the season saw Weston Athletic travel by minibus to the newly laid artificial rugby pitch at Odd Down in Bath.

A new experience for all the Weston players and a new experience for Rich Frost as he tried to master the arts of scrum half at very short notice.

A fierce cross wind just favoured Athletic but they set about their opponents by running rather than kicking and were on the score sheet in less than 3 minutes with a well taken chance from full back Jamie Russell's as he scored the opening try converted by Prime.

Culverhay were determined not to collapse as has happened in many of their games this season and they attacked the Weston line with great determination.

Their efforts were rewarded by an unconverted try but this seemed to energise the Athletic who produced a great display for the next 30 minutes despite losing centre James Matthews to a nasty arm injury requiring hospital treatment.

Prime scored and converted his own try and shortly afterwards Henry Monelle was on hand to put the finishing touch to a good Athletic back line move.

Prime again converted for a 21-5 lead and when Frost completed a series of forward drives with a try shortly before half time, the Athletic appeared to be ready to take full control.

However Culverhay had other ideas and using the wind which had now shifted to give them a significant advantage they set about mounting a series of attacks on the Athletic's line. Despite some great defensive work the Culverhay forwards forced two tries.

Twice Weston broke out of defence and looked certain to score but last ditch tackling by Culverhay and an uncharacteristic fumble by the Athletic backs saw two chances go begging.

With 10 minutes to go and with Frost injured it looked as though Athletic might suffer a rare defeat but determined defence and some great tackling by forwards and backs saw them hold firm and run out winners in a close contest by 26-17.

The players enjoyed a splendid buffet at the Culverhay clubhouse and then the delights of a number of hostelries on the way back from Bath as the Athletic celebrated the end of a very successful season with the finishing with 20 wins from 26 starts and third position in Tribute Somerset 2 North, more than 20 points in front of the fourth placed team.
