Tribute Somerset 2 North

Weston Athletic 118 Nailsea & Backwell nil

The opposition had clearly fielded a weak side but nevertheless Athletic produced a brilliant display of running rugby as they ran in 18 tries against a side that, to their credit, never gave up but who were completely outclassed.

The plan had been to spin the ball out to the Athletic's speedy backs but before the game plan could be put into effect full back Josh Wheeler picked up a poor clearance kick from the Nailsea fly half and ran through weak tackling to score under the posts with just 50 seconds on the board.

Weston dominated the forward play and provided a stream of possession for scrum half Dan Lomax and fly half Dan Prime to distribute the ball out wide.

It was pretty much one way traffic as the Athletic backs scored at will and there were first half tries for Jamie Russell, Dan Prime, Jo McGrath and Ben Wheeler. Lomax was piling on the agony with a brace of tries and 8 conversions by half time.

The second half saw the onslaught resume and the forwards, who were providing such frequent and clean possession were rewarded when Elliot Monelle picked up from the base of a scrum and forced his way over for the first try of the second half.

Winger Jack Bridgman and replacement centre Mitch Salisbury were both unlucky not to touch down in such a high scoring display but both carried ad distributed the ball well and can claim several assists each.

Nailsea tried everything that they could to stem the flow but they were tiring quickly. The game ended with a flurry of tries and a final score of 118 to nil. Records are being checked to see when Athletic last scored a ton, and indeed if this performance is a record best for Athletic.

Lomax had a personal tally of 44 points including four tries. Prime, McGrath , and Josh Wheeler got hat tricks, and Jamie Russell and Ben Wheeler scored two a piece. This bonus point win guarantees the Athletic get third place in Somerset 2 North and they cannot now be overtaken.

With previous league leaders Old Bristolians slipping up at Clevedon Weston Athletic may yet close the gap on them to challenge for the second spot.
