Tribute Somerset 2 North
Weston Athletic 43 Walcot Old Boys 2ndXV 10
Ched's away on a short holiday, Walker lost his player list, Chapper's to the rescue!!
Big thanks to George for chasing round and securing a team for the game on 1st November at home to Walcott OB II. The team duly assembled and thanks to Kirk Middlemiss (despite his lingering groin strain) and Sean Bennett at the last minute not only was a full side fielded but one with significant strengths.
Bennett was supposed to be a sub but due to Blain chasing round for a pair of boots for returnee Chad Smit, he started and Blain sat out the fist half on the bench. Sitting was the order of the day and Wheaters senior, also on the bench had found a nice comfy chair to watch the warm up and start of the game.
Weston made a very impressive start and put Walcott under huge pressure from the start. After just 3 minutes quick ball was supplied by the forwards and quickly spun out by scrum half Seb Harris and fly half Dan Prime finding Ben Wheeler in wrecking ball mood to crash through for a try, converted by Frost.
Secure possession was being achieved by a galvanised pack and Harris and Prime looked dangerous every time they had the ball. On 10 minutes with Walcott in disarray Harris shot through a gap in the defence out wide for the second try.
Good forward work continued and after a 15 metre drive Hancock was on hand to touch down near the posts for Frost to get a second conversion leaving Weston in control after 20 minutes with a 19-0 lead.
Harris had picked up a hand injury and left the field for treatment. PJ Grimes stepped in from the wing to take over the duties and Middlemiss went in to centre in a hastily rearranged backs line up. Further pressure from backs and forwards combining well together saw Middlemiss take a sharp chance out wide for the bonus point try.
Walcott woes were compounded as Weston drove forward and Smit dived through from short range to score under the posts for the fifth try of the half. Frost again converted but Walcott were stung into action and with Weston relaxing just before the whistle for half time they scored a try in the corner following a clever chip and chase but Weston looked to be in complete control at 31-5 at the interval.
At half time Will Hunt was heard to complain that Stamp in the second row was "pushing too hard". Smartly replaced by the veteran Wheaters and with Bryant going into the boiler the power of the pack was undiminished.
Within 4 minutes a huge drive from the Weston pack saw Walcott with the reversing lights on. Their scrum half attempted to kick the ball clear and with their pack still going backwards the ref had no choice but to award a penalty try.
This may have been a strategic error by Weston as the Walcott front row could not cope at all and the game was reduced to uncontested scrums. This denied Weston a significant advantage and gifted Walcott secure ball, something which they had not had all game.
At this level there is nothing for the superior side when this happens and the whole tenor of the game changed. Walcott took full advantage and created some pressure which they did convert to a try after 62 minutes.
Weston came back at them, keeping the ball in hand and using their superior strength to ruck and maul their way to the Walcott line. A couple of tries went begging but eventually Ben Wheeler crossed for his second try, converted again by Frost for Weston to run out deserved winners by 43-10.
This is the second game this season that Weston have been denied the full advantage of their pack by a side that cannot scrummage for the whole game, but on this occasion Weston not only won but picked up a valuable bonus point.
This leaves them in 4th place level with Gordano but with a very slightly inferior points difference. What price the missing 20 minutes against Stothert and Pitt now?
