Filer howler adds the humour to a great day....
Weston ended the season as they had started it by beating Oldfield. Weston gave Second team debuts to two Colts in winger Harry Charalambous and replacement fly half Loz Ware.
Leading up to this game Weston were lost as to who to select at fullback, until that was Jonathan Filer put his hand up and informed the coaches that he was quite proficient in that position.
Filer even hammered home the point by texting the coaches to expect a very Matt Perry ‘esque’ performance.....sadly for Jonathan he played more like Katy Perry!!!
Game under way and Weston had all the early possession and a quick penalty tap by scrum half Ollie Trott caught Oldfield sleeping. He found winger Charalambous who was tackled near to the try line.
Harry Nash recycled the ball well and unlike previous weeks unselfishly popped the ball to skipper Simon Hudson to score, conversion missed.
From the re-start Sam Fisher caught the ball and made good yardage. Centre Robbie Mackay then made a fine break and passed to number eight Tom Crossman who ran a great line to score under the posts and Dan Lomax added the conversion.
Crossman was soon taking a breather having been sent to the sin bin by the referee for deliberately knocking the ball on as Oldfield threatened.
Oldfield with the numerical advantage broke wide and scored a try through their winger as he rounded Troy Hannam.
Just before half time Mackay set off dancing around the Oldfield players who strangely could not get hold of him and Mackay glided in under the posts and Lomax added the extras. Weston went into the break leading 19-5.
At the start of the second half Weston secured the bonus point following a rare try by centre Mike Leahy following a good off load by Lomax. Lomax then added the conversion.
Now this is where Filer introduced himself to the game. With pretty much the whole of the Oldfield side on the right hand side of the pitch and plenty of room on the left, Filer for some bizarre reason decided to kick the ball badly straight to the giggling Oldfield players who played several phases and then ran over the top of Filer as if he wasn’t even there.
Filer who was now slightly dazed got back to his feet just in time for the young Oldfield flanker to humiliate him once more by strolling past him and scoring with ease, conversion added.
Now if that wasn’t enough for one game, Filer showed his poor kicking skills again. Filer had possession and with only five meters to work in and instead of keeping hold of the ball he decided to kick the ball, where I am not sure, but he hoofed it straight into touch on the full – are you sure you didn’t borrow Gunner’s boots???
Crossman was soon scoring his second of the game after the Weston forwards won a scrum against the head, Crossman broke threw a dummy and dived over the line, Lomax converted.
Oldfield then scored another converted try after breaking wide and Filer was sat down again as Oldfield went through and over him!
Filer was then able to redeem a little credit as he scored Weston’s sixth try following a fine break from Crossman and Filer snaked his way over, Lomax again added the conversion.
Replacement second row Ben Cradock then pulled off a try saving tackle as Oldfield went in search of the four try bonus point which in fairness to them they deserved but failed to get.
The last try of the game was scored by the hard working prop Rich Ford who broke through several would be tacklers to barge his way over the line and Lomax added the conversion.
This was a fine team performance by all, even Filer (who is a top man) who added the humour to a great day. Weston managed to reclaim third spot and score 100 points for the season in what has been a very good effort.
A big thank you to all the players that have played and everyone that helped along the way in particular Dom Sprague.
It has been a great season and I hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have.......enjoy the break boys.
