Tribute Somerset 2 North
Weston Athletic 28 Winscombe 2ndXV 35
The Athletic started this game with several regulars on United duty but with two new faces, Steve Mason and John Robinson and four Colts included in the team
The game began at a fast pace with Winscombe's young and well drilled backs attacking well. They were rewarded with two early tries and the visitors looked to be taking control. In the forwards it was a different story and Weston were taking some of the initiative back. Winscombe continued to apply pressure and after 20 minutes they were in the lead by 21 without reply.
The Athletic gradually exerted some control in the forwards and good line kicking by Chapman allowed them to attack the Winscombe line. Chapman forced his way over for a try which he converted but before half time Winscombe had struck twice more and looked to be running away with the game with the half time score 7-33 in their favour. Josh Wheeler had put in a number of excellent covering tackles which had prevented Winscombe from taking a bigger lead.
This really was a game of two halves and Weston put the pressure on from the word go after the break and some god line kicking allowed them to set up forward drives. Bush, who played a very prominent role in Weston's attacks, scored from a catch and drive from a line out, Chapman converting.
Just a few minutes later Weston scored again as Winscombe infringed as Weston went for a pushover try and the referee awarded a penalty try converted again by Chapman.
Weston kept up the pressure and with the forwards mauling their way towards the line the backs were released with quickly recycled ball and Ben James went over in the corner for a well worked try. Chapman converted from the corner leaving the Athletic a single score from squaring the game.
Winscombe defended superbly and denied Weston despite several near misses in the last five minutes. This was a very keenly contested game played for the most part with great spirit by both teams and Weston will be disappointed that they did not quite get the draw.
