Weston-super-Mare RFC
Stothert and Pitt RFC

Somerset Premier League

Weston United 49 Stothert & Pitt 17

The fortunate break in the fixture list last week allowing the United to rest. This could not have come at a better time as the complete team were suffering/recovering from Lime Testes. The exact source of the infection is yet to be determined but it is safe to say that the fungal attack currently affecting the country’s population of Ash Trees has been discounted. The team Sore Bones Livy has indicated that it was probably spread in the tight confines of the Wivy changing room through Carl Fletcher’s heinous abuse of citrus fruits.

The complete team were immediately quarantined until ex club Doctor George Papworth could complete a through inspection/diagnosis and with final relief it was confirmed that an unusual mass infection of ‘lime testicle' had occurred. Fortunately George was able to confirm that this is a fairly innocuous condition where every three weeks or so (on a diminishing basis) one of the testicles (they alternate apparently) will become bulbous, sore and take on a greenish sheen for about forty eight hours before retuning to normal. The doc advised that the only restrictive measure was to ensure the team did not ever ride mopeds, clearly all were gutted.

As a further measure all players were asked to avoid contact with rugby balls until their own returned to normal proportions.

Playing this week at home in front a of a lively crowd the United expected to perform following a fully attended training session on Thursday evening. Once again a changed side in terms of the forwards took to the field but with the backs were achieving a level of consistency welcoming back regular captain Sprague and legionnaire Oupoh having recovered from injury. The side also included a first outing in the United this season for both Somers and Eaton.

Morrissey also featured in a welcome injury return and was to cross the line for a first minute try running a lovely line, with an excellent conversion from wide out by Blizzard. This was to be backed up in the 3rd minute with Somers in the far right corner after a flowing move. Blizzard offering an equally impressive conversion to collect the extras.

Forwards allowed the backs to ball for Young on 16 mins to show a step and some gas providing Blizzard an easy kick in front of the posts. It was straight back to the forwards with Doughty crossing on 22 mins from a typical sniff of the whitewash and then Morrissey adding a his second, another great line through defence on 33mins

The half was to conclude with a Disney try on 38 mins again doing well with Blizzard collecting the extras for all the above. 42 – 0 and the United were offering a classy show.

It we had seen beauty (the first half) the beast was to follow and S&P started to get into the game with a penalty on 45 mins. Steele offered some relief with a familiar step on 52 mins with Blizzard to collect his final conversion of the day. S&P were to gain the glory as the game ran out scoring on 54 and 64 mins, collecting the extras with no reply. Some well deserved points following a difficult first half for them.

Morrissey was to retire just before half time (Hancock on) and his influence on the game was clear. Waterman on for Lomax after 55mins. The United will need to learn to be ruthless when in front, not step off the pressure, but all in a great win for the United and a bonus point earned.
