OLD PATESIANS 15 pts WESTON 32 pts
It was their first away victory against the Pats since their last success on January 18, 2003, and it was well deserved.
But things did not start well for the visitors. After only 26 seconds, home full-back Stuart Taylor was slicing through to the line, but Weston quickly responded.
After six phases the hosts were offside and James Mackay, operating at full-back, reduced the arrears with a 25 metre penalty.
Watkins’ first try arrived in the ninth minute when Mackay entered the line and the wing’s strength beat two defenders before rounding Taylor.
Watkins was in action four minutes later when he got back to stop his opposite number James A’Herne, but Patesians stayed where they were for James Pettigrew to dive over for their second unconverted try.
The hosts started the second half as they had the first and within three minutes, wing Danny Davis had levelled matters and for the next 10 minutes the Weston line was under siege.
But things altered dramatically when Ross Bennett picked up a loose ball and sprinted 45 metres before Roberts put Watkins over again to complete his hat-trick.
Mackay’s excellent conversion took the score to 22-15 but there was still important defending to do until Hobbs’ tap-and-go from a penalty saw the ball recycled quickly for Evans to put Watkins over for his fourth try.
Mackay converted again from the touchline and with eight minutes of normal time remaining he slotted his second penalty to finish things off.
