NATIONAL LEAGUE 3 SOUTH WEST

BRIDGWATER 3 pts WESTON 51 pts

WESTON scored seven tries without reply in a one-sided affair at College Way. In a poor quality match, each team conceded no fewer than 15 penalties.

It started from the kick-off when Ross Bennett was penalised for tackling a player whilst off his feet and the Seasiders had erred three times in as many minutes.

But it was soon Bridgwater’s turn and James Mackay’s penalty sent Weston on their way.

The Weston fly-half missed two more before he was converting skipper George Sparks’ try in the 12th minute.

George Wright’s clean break set up Mackay’s second penalty before the hosts had two players, Basson and Hastie yellow carded.

Westonm proceeded to take full advantage with Jamie Rudkin’s try following Ashley Russell’s line-out drive, and Wright’s score after good work by Sparks.

Mackay converted once but Bridgwater responded with Dominic Griffin’s penalty in the eighth minute of first half stoppage time, but by now, Paul Sprague was in the sin bin and the interval score was 3-25.

The Seasiders increased their advantage in the first minute of the second half when Andrew Glen, who had moved from the second row to take Sprague’s place on the wing, was on the end of some fast handling to dive over at the corner.

Mackay converted majestically and after more pressure, Sparks was soon touching down his second try.

Weston were now leading more than comfortably at 37-3, but replacement hooker Glen Cooper was on the field for less than a minute before he was red-carded for throwing a punch.

David Burge was re-introduced to the front row and his first action was to strike against the put-in for Bennett to give Matt Watkins a try down the narrow side. Mackay converted from the touchline and his fifth conversion and his 16th point followed in time added when he added the goal points to Rudkin’s second try.
