Weston United 39 Midsomer Norton 2ndXV 12

Report by Chris Heath

Weston's second string kept up their winning start to the season with this bonus point victory over a side who posed more than a few problems all afternoon. It was the visitors who put pressure on the home line at the start of the game but stout defence kept them at bay.

In fact Weston took the lead from a breakout from inside their twenty metre line when outside centre Chris Young ran almost the length of the pitch evading tacklers and sidestepping his way to the posts for the opening score which he himself converted. Almost immediately Weston added to their tally when a break by number eight Eddy Saunders led to Young chipping to the right flank for winger Darren Hancock to cross in the corner.

Norton hit back with some good attacks notably by their openside flanker who had a fine afternoon along with the inside centre. However Weston soaked up the pressure and increased their lead when a fine run by full back Anthony Gregory was finished off by Hancock who benefitted from a long cut out pass by fly half David Taylor.

Norton finally and deservedly got on the score sheet when indiscipline and static defence led to them crossing for a converted try.

With Weston only ten points in front at the break it was all to play for in the second period. Taylor produced a deft chip for left wing James Arnold to cross for a score that Young converted and it was Young who was on hand to pick up after another Arnold run.

The forwards then produced a great scummage which resulted in Jon Filer relocated to the right wing going over in the corner. Filer then got a second after a quick break. Norton got a consolation try near the end which on the balance of play they deserved.

This was the United's hardest test so far against a team who were also unbeaten going into the game and although nowhere near full flow it was good to see that they can win when not at their best.

A most welcome return for scrum half Luke Hember back after a very long break through injury was the icing on the cake as he managed to get through the whole game unscathed.
