National League 3 South West

Exmouth 71 Weston-super-Mare 25

Weston-super-Mare crashed to their heaviest defeat in league rugby when they conceded 11 tries to a rampant Exmouth team at the Imperial Ground.

The Seasiders were below strength in this final match of the season, fielding only two regular members of their back division and it was, perhaps, ironic that all the hosts' points were scored by their backs.

The match was as good as over by the 20th minute, Exmouth having scored their first four tries by Wathes and Powell, who each touched down twice, Feyter adding three conversions.

James Reid had replied with a penalty, but Ryan and Watkins scored further tries, together with Feyter's fourth conversion before Weston responded again when their two regular backs combined.

Kirk Middlemiss' 40-metre break was supported by Jack Conway who dived over at the right corner. But in first half stoppage time, Downie touched down Exmouth's seventh try to bring the score to 52-8.

A yellow card for Gavin Simpson in the third minute of the second half did not help Weston's cause and Feyter was soon converting his own try, but Ashley Russell's pack was, at last, getting to grips.

George Wright's line-out catch produced a try for Andrew Richards and, following Reid's long break, replacement Mark Armstrong touched down.

But the visitors' poor tackling, the main cause of the heavy defeat, yielded Downie's second try.

With seven minutes remaining, Russell's good work at a line-out gave the untiring Richards his second score which produced a bonus point. Conway converted but Exmouth had the final word with Feyter's conversion of Powell's hat-trick try.
