Old Patesians 22 Weston-super-Mare 12
Weston-super-Mare started poorly at Everest Road and although they were back into the match midway through the first half, they were unable to use the advantage of the slope after the break.
Old Pats were 12 points ahead after only nine minutes as Henry Bird fielded a poor kick by Mark Armstrong to gain 50 metres, and hooker Andy Deacon was the beneficiary of a short line-out drive. Adam Seager converted, then Bird took full advantage of a fortuitous bounce to score his team's second try.
Weston hit back with some more than useful work by the pack. The line-out, with Ashley Russell and Mike Kempton dominant, was backed up with solid ball keeping and in the 14th minute they were back in contention.
Roger Drabble's quick thinking at a tap penalty provided a try at the right corner for Dan Fry, his first for the club. But just before the break, a thrust by centre Stuart Taylor set up a penalty by Seager to give the hosts a 10-point advantage.
Weston were now playing down the considerable incline, but Patesians got the crucial score.Unauthorised conversation with referee Tom Davis took a penalty-scrum to within five metres of the Weston line and skipper James Pettigrew was able to touch down for Seager to convert.
Weston again retaliated and Armstrong was over, only to be penalised for an alleged double movement.
The Seasiders' line-out was still in good working order, but their continual drives were easily thwarted and it was not until the 76th minute that Fry's quick distribution from the top gave Harry Warman the space to put Armstrong over at the posts. Armstrong converted, but it was too late.
