Counties 3 Tribute Ale Somerset South

Weston United 88 Chard 2ndXV 7

Weston United remain third in the Counties 3 Tribute Ale Somerset South league, eight points behind leaders Tor with a game in hand, as they ran in 14 tries against a Chard 2ndXV who are three places off the foot of the table.

The hosts had secured a try-scoring bonus point within the opening 20 minutes after tries from left wing Tom Blyth, No,8 Gavin Simpson, outside centre Harry Jones and fly-half Chris Young, who also converted all four.

There were a further six United tries before the break, with touchdowns from full back Oli Marshall, second row Ashley Russell, right wing Ed Davies, scrum half Fin Simpson, inside centre Dan Beer and a second from Jones, with Young converting four of them.

Leading 66-nil going into the second half, and United quickly added to the account with a try from second row Ross Chesher. The visitors’ only score came 15 minutes after the restart with a try from inside centre Billy Vernon, with fellow centre Danny Twose adding the extras.

After that brief relapse, Chesher, Blyth and Beer claimed their second tries of the match, with Young adding one conversion for the vice-captain’s 23-point haul for the afternoon. It keeps the United in the title hunt with one more game to play in the first half of this campaign.

On Saturday, Weston United will travel to face a Wiveliscombe 2ndXV side that is two places off the foot of the table, having won just once at home this season, and that was back in September when they beat Wellington 2ndXV.
