Counties 3 Tribute Ale Somerset South
Weston United 66 Crewkerne nil
After a two-week break, the United find themselves at home to Crewkerne, having won one and lost one. Training this week has been spot on, with some live contact on Tuesday evening and nearly 100% attendance at training Thursday evening for the 1st and United, with only the returning love-struck Callum Kingscott, in the air, honeymoon coming to an end, missing.
Training has had its highlights,
DC - “Robson, jump in the boiler while we’re at the scrummage machine, it will improve your versatility”
Robson - “I can’t do that DC. Last time I went in the boiler, I broke the scrum”
Ruffle - “I think we have a glitch in the matrix”
Despite Robson’s power concerns, all made it through both sessions, and the United took to the field with what appears to be the strongest side in a long while, with the former club Captain and maple syrup fan Tom Sugg, and 2024/25 player of the year Kingscott, starting from the bench, I know, crazy.
Joking aside, selection is a massive issue for the DoR team with a wealth and quality of players not seen in a while, and all are competing for the same jerseys, making training competitive and selection simply difficult. Keep it up, lads. Within this, there is a fantastic squad attitude, and whatever success we enjoy is as a squad, not a team or individual.
Moley arrives fresh from his last ping pong tournament at 13:30, and this week it’s his turn on the tunes — a perfect soundtrack to kick on a dominant afternoon.
As Storm Amy continues to pound, Weston welcomes Crewkerne to the seaside with Captain Young winning the toss and choosing to play left to right (that’s what the WhatsApp said, so I have no idea if that is with or against Amy).
Two minutes in, and an early chance was missed as Oli Marshall, who couldn’t quite gather the ball. Not to be put off the racing snake makes up for it on 6 minutes with the opening try, converted by George Nuttycombe.
United 7–0 Crewkerne, 6mins
Robson Bird carries well, nearly crossing the line, but offers the offloaded to Ross Chesher, who finishes under the posts. Nuttycombe added the extras.
United 14–0 Crewkerne, 10mins
From the restart, Marshall sprints 60 metres to score again. Nuttycombe converts.
United 21–0 Crewkerne, 12mins
Big carries from John and Hebbard create the platform for Nuttycombe, who feeds Tom Blyth. A slick sidestep from Crazy Leg Crane and another converted try.
United 28–0 Crewkerne, 14mins,
Rhodri Williams replaces Callum Bliss-Climo (hamstring) 20mins, and we see our vice-captain on the field. Rhodri is the preferred United Captain and an outstanding player but due to the quality of the back row and the rotation with the 1st XV has had to start from the bench.
As he slips into his preferred 7 position, I can’t help but wonder if he's got a bit of Outside Centre about him. I only raise this based on the number of bust photos I keep receiving from him. Clearly unhappy with the first effort, I look to grumpy, my eyelashes aren’t right, I’m not pouting correctly…….this isn’t normal for a backrow forward.

7 or 13? Anyway, you decide.
United win a penalty, Nuttycombe kicks to the corner. Owens finishes a driving maul. No extras.
United 33–0 Crewkerne, 23mins
24mins and Ieuan John is off, Tom Sugg returns, and Sam Light moves to the tighthead position.
30mins and Bird makes way for Callum Kingscott.
Captain decides it’s his turn, and Young joins the scoring with a sharp inside line from Hebbard. Nuttycombe converts.
United 40–0 Crewkerne, 31mins and it’s half time.
Half-time sees a couple more changes: Tom Wheatley on for Vinnie Jones, who has enjoyed his first start at hooker, and Isaac Bliss relieves Marshall.
Williams, in his stride, collects the kick-off and offloads to Hebbard, who scores under th posts. Nuttycombe adds the extras again.
United 47–0 Crewkerne, 41mins
Hebbard wants more and powers over for his second after strong phases from Sugg and Williams.
United 59–0 Crewkerne, 56mins
Another rotation of the subs sees John for Light, Jones for Chesher, and Marshall for Blyth.
Nuttycombe is looking dangerous with a 40m dart ending, unfortunately, in a crossing infringement over the try line and a penalty for Crewkerne.
Wheatly gets the final say, running a crisp tips line from Sugg and dotted down. Nuttycombe, who’s been good with the boot all afternoon, converts.
United 66–0 Crewkerne, 70mins
Final Score
Weston United 66 – 0 Crewkerne
Full time and the lads are in the sheds singing. Post-match tunes courtesy of our Welsh maestro Ieuan John — and he didn’t disappoint.
On another day, if the back three had held their catches and Ky Pearce had his passing hands on, who knows what the score might’ve been…
Our thanks to Crewkerne and safe travels home, we look forward to meeting you again later in the season.
Notable performances from:-
Hebbard with two tries, relentless carries, and rock-solid defence, MOM.
Nuttycombe was masterful at fly-half, converting 7 tries and steering the ship.
Jones looked assured at hooker.
Suggs & Kingscott — the Bash Brothers — brought power and presence off the bench.
Young’s leadership and cheeky thumbs-up added charm to a clinical display.
The pleasure is all yours
