Wellington Chiefs 5 Weston-super-Mare 71

Three tries each for outside centre Cam Maslen and wing Hayden Main, to take his tally to 17 touchdowns in six games this season, as league leaders Weston-super-Mare ran in 11 tries against a Wellington Chiefs side at the other end of the table, writes Chris Heath.

Weston had travelled to Wellington with several changes to their line-up due to injuries. After an initial surge by the hosts, the ball was not cleared with precision, and left wing Main was only prevented from adding to his considerable tally by a misplaced pass.

The visitors, however, were on the scoreboard shortly after when a strong surge by lock George Talbot, after hooker Adam Fisher had snaffled the ball, led to fly half George Nuttycombe perfectly timing his pass to put Maslen over for the opening try.

Nuttycombe added the conversions and the extras to Weston's second try a couple of minutes later. Great work and a long pass by scrum half Jack Press put full-back Alex Howman away before feeding Main, who cut in under the sticks.

There then followed a tremendous break by inside centre Marcus Nel, who put Keanu Ballard away, and the right wing's pass inside to Maslen was timed to perfection, with the centre galloping away for his second.

Nuttycombe was again on target with his conversion to give Weston a 21-nil lead with XXXX minutes on the clock. Wellington kept going and provided some spirited attacking, but were all too often let down by a loose pass.

The Chiefs were having some success with the scrum and, after Weston infringed in front of their own posts, the hosts were pounding the line but were unable to breach the excellent visitors' defence.

After another Weston indiscretion, Wellington took a quick tap to score their opening try, which was not converted. The game was getting very fractious with both teams receiving yellow cards, but the visitors went into the break 21-5 ahead.

Wellington started the second half as they finished the first on the attack. Weston tried to get out of their half but were penalised all too often, but after dominating possession, Wellington lost the ball.

Nuttycombe, Nel, and Howman sent Maslen away for his third after starting the attack twenty metres from their own line. Weston scored again when a kick through and chase led to the prolific winger Main scoring his second try of the game, which Nuttycombe converted.

Weston then were awarded a rare penalty, and from the line out, a catch and drive resulted in replacement hooker Gary Carpenter touching down. Weston had weathered the mid-game storm and were hungry for yet more tries.

Second row Tom Sugg, in his first start of the season, benefited from replacement fly-half Archie Tilsley's short pass to gallop over after great work by Nel and Maslen. Tilsley converted from in front of the posts.

Carpenter then made some yards before Press went blind to give replacement flanker Matt James the chance to speed away for another score, Tilsley converted. Weston finished off with a flowing move, starting with a long pass by Nel taken on by Nuttycombe and finished off by right wing Keanu Ballard.
