Weston-super-Mare 49 Wadebridge Camels 22

Report by Chris Heath

Weston-super-Mare extended their unbeaten run to five games this season, and are now five points clear at the top of the Regional 2 Tribute Ale South West table, as they outscored first-time visitors Wadebridge Camels seven tries to three.

It was an ideal day for rugby, with a light breeze, relatively mild conditions, and a large, expectant crowd. Weston started brilliantly with left wing Hayden Main putting centre Alex Howman away for the opening try.

Fly-half Archie Tilsley added the extras. Wadebridge cut the lead with a penalty before a superb break by inside centre Marcus Nel put Howman away for his second in quick time. Tilsley again converting.

Midway through the half, Weston flanker Nasili Ikahihifo powered through to score under the posts with Tilsley again adding the extras. The fly-half then added three points from a penalty.

Wadebridge, who had gone into the game in third place, hit back with an unconverted try to make the score 24-8 at the interval.

The second half began with Weston once again on the attack, but unforced errors prevented them from capitalising on their lead. They kept the pressure on and, after a sustained attack, Wadebridge conceded a penalty which Tilsley kicked for the first points of the half.

After the restart and the visitors had regained the ball, it was spun wide but was spilt and try-hungry Main kicked through and gathered to give Weston their fourth try and the hosts' bonus point.

Tilsley missed the conversion for the first time. Weston were still giving silly penalties away, and from one such indiscretion, Weston were undone by Wadebridge's power game. The try was converted.

Main was then yellow-carded for a deliberate knock on, and the visitors began to sniff a chance of redemption. They scored again to cut the hosts' lead to ten points with a successful conversion.

With Weston giving away more penalties, the visitors began a catch-and-drive, but Weston gained the ball, and a howitzer of a boot by Howman gave Weston a fifty-twenty-two throw-in near the visitors' line.

Weston battered the opposition, and Ikahihifo eventually crossed for his second. Replacement fly-half George Nuttycombe hits the posts with the conversion attempt.

Great hands near the end resulted in a fantastic team try for right wing Keanu Ballard following an excellent pass by flanker Jacob Cox.

Shortly after, scrum-half Jack Press produced a sublime inside pass to put Main away for his second and fourteenth of the season. Nuttycombe converted.

Talbot was yellow-carded for chatting very near the end. Wadebridge had one last go but were held up over the line. Referee Ed Eades blew the final whistle, and Weston had another five league points in the bag.
