Regional 2 South West
Weston-super-Mare 56 Penzance & Newlyn 33
Report by Chris Heath
Weston attacked from the start and after some great play by forwards and backs fly half Archie Tilsley dummied and went over under the sticks to make his conversion an easy one and Weston were seven points to the good in no time.
The hosts looked up for it and after centre Cam Maslen excelled in gathering a high ball from Tilsley, Weston earned a penalty which resulted in left wing Hayden Main adding to his season's tally after taking an inside pass from Tilsley to also go under the sticks with fly half also converting.
The visitors had a chance to reduce the lead but scuffed their penalty attempt.
Weston's defence at this time was of the highest order and they again earned a penalty off the back of it which was kicked to the corner.
Ashley Russell rose like a salmon and hooker Adam Fisher who had thrown in was on hand to touch down for the hosts third try in the first nineteen minutes. Tilsley expertly converted from wide out on the right.
In the twenty fifth minute Weston scored an absolute beauty for the bonus point with centre Marcus Nel making the initial break and eventually full back Alex Howman straightened the line before passing to Maslen who combined with flanker Jacob Cox to put Main away for his second.
Tilsley's golden boots converting in off the post from the left hand touch line this time.
Weston were looking tremendously impressive and when Nel put right wing Keanu Ballard away for a scintillating score involving standing up three defenders and ghosting under the posts for Tilsley to add a simple two points.
With Nel prostrate on the floor Pirates made a good break and only a last ditch tap tackle by Howman prevented them from opening their account.
But with half time approaching the visitors finally got on the score sheet with a well taken try which was added to with fine conversion to make the score thirty five points to seven at half time.
Playing into a stiff breeze Weston scored the opening try of the second half soon after the restart when Tilsley benefitted from Fishers strong run to convert his own try.
Pirates hit back with a well taken try wide out on the right but the conversion was missed. In the fiftieth minute George Nuttycombe replaced Tilsley and birthday boy Ross Chesher replaced fellow lock Sam Light.
Pirates had their tails up but superb defence kept them at bay and Russell finally earned Weston a relieving penalty.
Weston were not too disheartened and after superb pressure by the forwards Main went over near the posts for his hat trick. Nuttycombe converting.
Another superb break by Fisher aided by the impressive prop Will Bamsey provided excellent entertainment. Bamsey was not too disheartened be denied and scored a beauty after being put away by tremendous captain Charlie Brabham.
Nuttycombe again converting.
With scrum half Ryan Watterston directing play Weston were looking their most impressive for years with their defence almost as impressive as their attack. However a lucky bounce and brush off of a couple of would be tacklers enabled Pirates to score a converted try under the sticks.
The visitors finally had their tails up and looked to have scored their fourth but a forward pass thwarted them. Weston however had infringed but a try saving tackle by Cox prevented a further try.
They then looked to have scored again after taking one against the head on Weston's line but eventually their pressure told when their powerful centre scored their bonus point try which was again converted.
Penzance scored again near the end to make the scoreline more respectable but Weston were worthy winners.
Everyone in the eighteen played their part for the hosts with Adam Fisher's all round one hundred percent performance just pipping flanker Cox for the man of the match.
